Two-time Tony winner Sam Mendes will team with Audible to create three audio dramas adapted from classic Charles Dickens stories, according to a report in Deadline. Oliver Twist, reportedly featuring an "all-star British cast," will come first in November, with two additional titles following next year.
Mendes will executive produce the series, to be recorded at Audible's London studio. Casting as well as 2023 titles will be announced.
A Tony winner for directing Broadway's The Lehman Trilogy and The Ferryman, Mendes also helmed Cabaret, The Blue Room, Gypsy, and The Vertical Hour on Broadway. Also an accomplished film director, Mendes won an Oscar directing American Beauty and also helmed Skyfall, 1917, The Road to Perdition, and Revolutionary Road, among others.
Originally founded to distribute audio books, Audible has turned much of its efforts into creating audio dramas in recent years, many featuring stage favorites or originating as stage productions. Off-Broadway productions of Long Day's Journey Into Night, You Are Here: An Evening with Solea Pfeiffer, HEART, and The Cube were all released for streaming through Audible earlier this year.
