Music Theatre International has acquired licensing rights for Flying Over Sunset, which premiered on Broadway last year. The work features a book by James Lapine, music by Tom Kitt, and lyrics by Michael Korie.
Inspired by a true story, the musical follows Cary Grant, The Women playwright Clare Boothe Luce, and Aldous Huxley as they share an otherworldly trip on LSD in a beautiful beach house overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The Broadway premiere, produced by Lincoln Center Theater, received four 2022 Tony Award nominations, including Best Original Score, Leading Actress in a Musical (Carmen Cusack), Scenic Design (Beowulf Boritt and 59 Productions), and Lighting Design (Bradley King).
"Flying Over Sunset is a wonderfully unique musical that will thrill audiences and provide adventurous directors a rare opportunity to flex their creative muscles," shares MTI President and CEO Drew Cohen. "James Lapine has written an original and heartfelt book that invites us to explore the meaning of individual desire, love, and loss. Tom Kitt dazzles with a breathtaking score, and Michael Korie provides deep insight with his captivating lyrics. We look forward to seeing new productions of this show on stages around the country as well as internationally."
