Amy Herzog's An Enemy of the People Adaptation Joins Concord Theatricals Library

Amy Herzog's new adaptation of Ibsen's An Enemy of the People is joining the licensing catalogue of Concord Theatricals, which will license the work to schools and theatres via its Samuel French imprint. The title is currently available for professional productions. Herzog's take on the Ibsen classic debuted on Broadway in 2024, with Succession star Jeremy Strong leading the cast as Doctor Thomas Stockmann. Herzog won a Drama Desk Award for the adaptation, which was also nominated for a 2024 Tony Award.

Randy Johnson's jukebox biomusical A Night With Janis Joplin has joined the catalogue of Broadway Licensing. The musical celebrating the life and music of Joplin along with her inspirations Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone, and Bessie Smith, played on Broadway in 2013.

It's Showtime for Beetlejuice JR., Now Available for Licensing

Part of MTI's Broadway Junior collection, Beetlejuice JR. is an hour-long adaptation of the cult-favorite 2019 musical designed especially for performers 18 and under. Based on Tim Burton’s 1988 film (also a cult favorite), Beetlejuice follows strange and unusual teenager Lydia Deetz, whose life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and Beetlejuice, a demon with a thing for stripes. When Lydia calls on Beetlejuice to scare away anyone with a pulse, this double-crossing specter unleashes a (nether)world of pandemonium.

MTI Releases Junie B.'s Essential Survival Guide to School JR.

In this follow-up to Junie B. Jones The Musical, Junie B. is writing the ultimate guide to surviving first grade, battling against writer's block and lots of other obstacles along the way. Both Junie B. Jones The Musical and Junie B.'s Essential Survival Guide to School were originally developed as Theatre for Young Audiences titles by TheatreWorks USA, which produced world premieres of both musicals at Off-Broadway's Lucille Lortel Theatre and toured them to schools nationwide.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child School Edition Is Now Available for Licensing

The high school edition of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been released for worldwide licensing, and will be ready for performances next fall. The theatrical sequel to the bestselling Harry Potter series of books is set 19 years later, and follows the next generation of students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The high school edition shortens the play’s run time, and makes adjustments to the magical stage effects, enabling the piece to be produced by schools regardless of budget.

Music Theatre International Releases Elephant & Piggie's 'We Are in a Play!' JR. for Licensing

Mo Willems' children's book series Elephant & Piggie comes to the stage with Elephant & Piggie's "We Are in a Play!" JR., now available to license via Music Theatre International. Now part of MTI's Broadway Junior collection, the title is adapted from a musical that premiered at The Kennedy Center in 2012. This story sees Gerald the elephant worried that his best friendship with Piggie the pig might hit a snag, but that's before they get an invite to the Squirrelles' party.

Attention, U.S. High Schools: You Can Now Perform Hadestown

The 2019 Best Musical Tony winner is now available for high schools to perform in a revised teen edition! Revisions to the folk- and jazz-infused retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice include adjusted vocal arrangements to better suit teenage voices (including modified features for the Fates and transposed keys), worker chorus vocals that have been converted to be a flexible and expandable SATB ensemble, the removal of stage action and language related to substance abuse and sexual references, suggested dialogue and music adjustments for productions using performance tracks, and approval to optionally cut "Our Lady of the Underground," "Nothing Changes," and "We Raise Our Cups" for productions using accompaniment tracks and/or shorter run times.

Something Rotten! JR. Released for Licensing From Music Theatre International

Something Rotten!, which played on Broadway in 2015, follows the Bottom brothers, both playwrights trying to best their superstar contemporary William Shakespeare. When a soothsayer predicts the next big thing in theatre will be the new and never-before-seen genre of song-and-dance, the brothers endeavor to write the world's first musical. This new edition of the show is part of the licensor's Broadway Junior catalogue, which adapts full-length musicals into 60-minute versions designed for performers aged 18 and under.


THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN (Revised Edition)

Revised Unsinkable Molly Brown Musical Released for Licensing

Dick Scanlan’s revised version of Meredith Willson’s The Unsinkable Molly Brown is now available for licensing in the U.S. The musical is based on the life of Margaret “Molly” Brown, a suffragist, labor rights advocate, and survivor of the Titanic. The new edition replaces the original 1960 Broadway version in MTI’s catalogue.

Jodi Picoult, Timothy Allen McDonald Musical Breathe Now Available to License via Music Theatre International

Breathe explores five pairs of characters as they grapple with the effects of COVID-19, exploring such topics as parenting, social justice, and grief against the backdrop of a global pandemic. The show—the third collaboration between McDonald and Picoult following Between the Lines and The Book Thief—is structured as five interlocking suites, each featuring a score by a different team of songwriters. That group includes Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich, Rob Rokicki and Rebecca Murillo, Danuel Mertzlufft and Kate Leonard, Doug Besterman and Sharon Vaughn, and Douglas Lyons and Ethan Pakchar.

Dot & the Kangaroo JR. Now Licensable via Music Theatre International

Music Theatre International has released Dot & The Kangaroo JR. for licensing. Based on the classic 1899 Australian novel by Ethel Pedley, the musical follows a young girl who loses her way searching for adventure in the Australian bush. She befriends a mother kangaroo, who gathers some other bush creatures to help her find her way back home.


GROUNDHOG DAY

Groundhog Day Musical Released for Licensing on Groundhog Day

Phil Connors is a cynical Pittsburgh TV weatherman who is sent to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in the isolated small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, when he finds himself caught in a time loop, forced to repeat the same day again and again…and again. Based on the 1993 film of the same name, Groundhog Day the musical premiered at London's Old Vic in 2016 and played a brief Broadway run the following year. The work returned to the Old Vic for an encore run in 2023. Now it has been released for licensing worldwide. (Some international restrictions may apply.)

Paula Vogel's Mother Play Acquired by Concord Theatricals for Licensing

Concord Theatricals has acquired worldwide English licensing rights for Paula Vogel's Mother Play and will license the play via its Samuel French imprint. Mother Play (A play in five evictions) made its premiere on Broadway in the Spring of 2024, earning a Tony nomination for Best Play and nods for each of its three-member cast (Jessica Lange, Celia Keenan-Bolger, and Jim Parsons). The semi-autobiographical work tracks a single mother and her two children over 40 years in the D.C. area, covering evictions, gin, cigarettes, and more accoutrements of a changing world. Once Upon a One More Time Joins Music Theatre International Catalogue; Broadway JR. Version in Development

Britney Spears jukebox musical Once Upon a One More Time had just a brief Broadway run in 2023, but don't count it out just yet. Music Theatre International has added the musical to its catalogue, and is developing a Broadway JR. edition of the title for young performers. In fact, young performers will be MTI's first priority when it comes to Once Upon a One More Time. Along with the JR. edition aimed at elementary, junior high, and middle schools, a high school edition will be the first version of the full-length musical to be released for performances. What a Wonderful World Holiday Revue Joins Music Theatre International Catalogue

This holiday jukebox musical (not to be confused with the Louis Armstrong jukebox musical of a similar name) follows Santa and Mrs. Claus as they try to retire, but first, they must pass the baton to the new Santa. ​​When the magic sleigh bells choose a young New York advertising executive for the position, he declines the offer, putting the North Pole (and the fate of Christmas) in jeopardy. In addition to the title song, the musical features Christmas hits such as “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” and “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” as well as pop songs from artists including Kelly Clarkson, Imagine Dragons, and more.
