Ayad Akhtar's McNeal Joins Dramatists Play Service Catalogue

Pulitzer-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar's most recent Broadway play McNeal has joined the Dramatists Play Service catalogue for worldwide licensing. DPS is an imprint of Broadway Licensing Global. The work made its debut via Lincoln Center Theater on Broadway in 2024, with Robert Downey Jr. starring as Jacob McNeal, a celebrated author fixated on artificial intelligence—and the Nobel Peace Prize in Literature. McNeal joins a catalogue already including Akhtar's The Who & The What, Junk, The Invisible Hand, and his Pulitzer-winning Disgraced.

Music Theatre International Releases Customizable Disaster Relief Benefit Revue for Licensing

Music Theatre International's previously announced reconfiguration of its benefit musical revue All Together Now! is now available for licensing by schools and theatres in the U.S. and Canada. Originally designed to help theatre companies pull themselves out of COVID-19 pandemic shortages, a revised version of the title is now available to theatre companies and groups looking to produce benefit concerts to support disaster relief.

Between the Lines JR. Now Available for Licensing From Music Theatre International

Music Theatre International has released a new JR. adaptation of the 2022 Off-Broadway musical Between the Lines for licensing. Based on the novel by Jodi Picoult and Samantha van Leer, the musical follows Delilah, an outsider in a new school who seeks comfort in her favorite book, where she feels heard and understood. The lines between reality and fantasy begin to blur, and she has to confront whether she has the power to rewrite her own story. Following a world premiere at Kansas City Rep in 2017, the musical made an Off-Broadway bow in 2022. Between the Lines JR. adapts the full-length musical into an hour-long show designed for young performers.

Water for Elephants Now Available for High Schoolers to Perform

Youngsters will now get to run to school and join the circus. Broadway's Water for Elephants is now available for high school licensing by Broadway Licensing Global. The musical, based on Sara Gruen's novel, tells the story of a man who runs away from his life, only to find himself caught up in a traveling circus. It opened on Broadway in the spring of 2024, and was nominated for seven Tony awards, including Best Musical.


DARLING GRENADINE

Darling Grenadine Now Available For Licensing

Music Theatre International has officially released the new musical Darling Grenadine for licensing. Written by Daniel Zaitchik, Darling Grenadine is a bittersweet Manhattan story that follows charismatic songwriter Harry and his relationships with performer Louise, his brother Paul, and his beloved dog. The musical premiered Off-Broadway in 2020, though the run was cut short by the COVID-19 shutdown. A cast recording featuring original cast members Adam Kantor, Emily Walton, Jay Armstrong Johnson, Mike Nappi, Aury Krebs, and Matt Dallal was released in 2022.


ALEX EDELMAN'S JUST FOR US

Alex Edelman's Just for Us Will Be Licensed by Dramatists Play Service

Dramatists Play Service has acquired Alex Edelman's Tony-honored solo show Just for Us, which is now available for licensing by theatres worldwide. The work—exploring how Edelman's personal experiences with anti-Semitic abuse online led him to crash a gathering of White Nationalists incognito in New York City—premiered at Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2018 before playing runs at London's Soho Theatre, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Off-Broadway, Broadway, and more. The 2023 Broadway bow was filmed and broadcast on HBO and now can be streamed on Max. Edelman was honored with a 2024 Special Tony Award for the production, and the filmed version earned him an Emmy.


IBSEN'S GHOST

Ibsen's Gost: An Irresponsible Biographical Fantasy follows Henrik Ibsen's widow Suzannah shortly after the playwright's death, as she is confronted with her husband's long-lost illegitimate son, a libelous so-called diary being shopped around by a former protégée, and a mysterious exterminator. The comedy had its world premiere off-Broadway in 2024 starring playwright Charles Busch as Suzannah.


STRIKE UP THE BAND and LET 'EM EAT CAKE

After having been hidden away for some time, Concord Theatricals has acquired the licensing rights to both Strike Up The Band and Let 'Em Eat Cake, making them available to amateur groups once again. With songs by George and Ira Gershwin, and books by George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind, these two musicals join with the same team's Pulitzer Prize-winning Of Thee I Sing (already licensed by Concord) to form a sort of trilogy of political satire musicals. Let 'Em Eat Cake is a direct sequel to Of Thee I Sing, in which President Wintergreen is defeated in his bid for reelection, and subsequently starts a shirt-selling business in an attempt to overthrow his replacement. Strike Up The Band is an anti-war satire in which cheese magnate Horace J. Fletcher, in order to get a tariff on foreign cheeses passed through congress, offers to sponsor a war with Switzerland.


THE PRINCE OF EGYPT

The Prince of Egypt Musical Joins Music Theatre International Catalogue

Music Theatre International has added DreamWorks Theatricals’ The Prince of Egypt to its licensing catalogue. The screen-to-stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film follows the Book of Exodus, in which Moses leads thousands of Israelite slaves out of Egypt and across the Red Sea to freedom. The Prince of Egypt had its world premiere at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley in 2017, followed by productions in Denmark, Utah, and London's West End.


MANAHATTA

Playwright: Mary Kathryn Nagle

Mary Kathryn Nagle's play about a young Native woman who reconnects with her ancestral Lenape homeland after moving from Oklahoma to New York for a banking job in 2008 played Off-Broadway at the Public Theater in 2023, and is now available to be licensed from Concord Theatricals.


ONCE UPON A ONE MORE TIME (High School Version)

Britney Spears Jukebox Musical Once Upon a One More Time Is Headed to a High School Near You

High schools can now perform the Britney Spears jukebox musical Once Upon a One More Time. Theatrical licensor Music Theatre International has released the high school version of the 2023 Broadway musical for licensing, making the title available to non-college school groups in North America, the U.K., and Australia. The musical uses 23 of Spears' most popular songs—including "Crazy," "Oops!...I Did It Again," "Lucky," and "Toxic"—to tell a story of a group of fairytale princesses whose world is turned upside down when a progressive fairy godmother arrives with a copy of The Feminine Mystique. The high school version presents the full-length musical with slight edits and materials designed expressly for teenage performers.

Heidi Schreck's translation and adaptation of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya has joined the licensing catalogue of Concord Theatricals, newly part of its Samuel French imprint. Stereophonic Announces West End Run, U.S. Tour

Concord Theatricals has acquired the licensing rights to the 2024 Tony-winning Best Play, Stereophonic. The play follows an unnamed '70s rock band recording their sophomore album. Stereophonic made history when it earned 13 Tony Award nominations: the most of any play, ever. Music Theatre International Adds Suffs to Its Licensing Catalogue

Christmas in Connecticut Joins Broadway Licensing Catalogue

Christmas in Connecticut, a stage adaptation of the 1945 film, has joined the catalogue of Broadway Licensing. The story follows Liz Lane, a columnist and expert on marriage, cooking, and homemaking who's asked by her publisher to host a war hero for the holidays at her Connecticut farmhouse. Unfortunately that means people might find out that she actually knows nothing about cooking, is single, and lives in a small New York City apartment.  The stage adaptation was initially commissioned by Broadway Licensing and Peter Schneider Productions, and made its world premiere at Goodspeed Musicals in 2022. Pioneer Theatre Company staged a production in 2023. The title will be available for productions beginning Christmas season 2025.


ANNE OF GREEN GABLES

Broadway-Aimed Anne of Green Gables Musical Joins Broadway Licensing Catalogue

Broadway Licensing has added the Broadway-aimed musical Anne of Green Gables to its catalogue. Adapted from L.M. Montgomery's book, the musical made its world premiere in 2022 at Goodspeed Musicals, and was developed by Justin Nichols and The Rev Theatre Company in 2018. The classic story follows Anne Shirley after being sent to live with the Cuthberts on their farm, Green Gables. This musical adaptation, with a book and lyrics by Matte O'Brien and music by Matt Vinson, tells the tale with a contemporary, folk-rock score. HOW TO DANCE IN OHIO

How to Dance in Ohio Joins Music Theatre International Catalogue

Music Theatre International has added the neurodivergent coming-of-age musical How to Dance in Ohio to its licensing catalogue. Based on Alexandra Shiva's 2015 HBO documentary, the musical  follows the challenges faced by a group of autistic young adults at a counseling center in Ohio, where, with the support of clinical psychologist Dr. Emilio Amigo, a spring formal dance is arranged. Cole Escola's Oh, Mary! Will Be Licensed by Dramatists Play Service

Broadway Licensing Global's Dramatists Play Service imprint has picked up Cole Escola's hit play Oh, Mary!. The play, which premiered Off-Broadway in the spring of 2024, and came to Broadway shortly after, centers on famous First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. In Escola's demented take (or as press notes put it, "through the lens of an idiot"), Mary Todd becomes a madcap, cabaret-obsessed alcoholic. The title is not yet available for licensing, though the company is already taking pre-orders for their published edition of Escola's script at Dramatists.com.

& Juliet Joins Music Theatre International Catalogue

Music Theatre International has added pop jukebox musical & Juliet to their catalogue. Kate Douglas' The Apiary, More Added to Dramatists Play Service Catalogue
