Alan Brody’s Operation Epsilon will make its U.K. premiere this fall with Tony winner Andy Sandberg directing. Previews begin September 15 at Southwark Playhouse Elephant, with opening set for September 20. Performances will continue through October 21.
Operation Epsilon is inspired by a real story from World War II in which 10 of Germany's leading nuclear scientists were captured and held captive by British and American forces in the English countryside. While being held in England, the scientists learn that they were beaten to the atomic bomb by the United States' Manhattan Project. The play is based on actual transcripts that were secretly recorded and kept classified for decades.
The work originally made its world premiere in Cambridge, Massachusetts with Sandberg at the helm. “The whole process of writing Operation Epsilon from its very inception has been a labor of love,” said playwright Alan Brody. Sandberg added, “It’s been an honor to collaborate with Alan Brody on this play’s development and extraordinary journey for over a decade now. It feels particularly fitting to present Operation Epsilon in the country where the play is set, and the subject is more relevant today than ever as we grapple with the inherent conflict between scientific advancement and its ethical consequences.”
The creative team also includes set designer Janie Howland, costume designer and associate set designer Beth Colley, lighting designer Clancy Flynn, and sound designer Chris Drohan. Lucy Cassoon is casting director.
