Two concert performances of Andrew Lippa's I Am Harvey Milk, based on the life of the LGBTQ+ activist, will be presented October 27 at London's Cadogan Hall.
The concerts will feature Joel Harper-Jackson (Standing at the Sky's Edge, Cock) in the title role, joined by Sierra Boggess (Love Never Dies, Phantom of the Opera), with a 50-strong choir and a 26-piece orchestra.
Vanessa Williams (The Devil Wears Prada, Ugly Betty) and Alex Jennings (My Fair Lady, The Crown) will host the European premiere of the oratorio, which will raise money for the LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall. Williams will host the matinee performance and Jennings the evening show.
The concerts will be directed by Kirk Jameson with musical direction by Jonathan Gill and movement direction by Khiley Williams.
Harvey Milk was the first openly gay man elected to public office in California, serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in the late 1970s until his assassination. Milk championed anti-discrimination laws, affordable housing, and equal rights, while giving a powerful voice to marginalized communities.
I Am Harvey Milk weaves the story of Milk’s
life—from boyhood, to his rise as the first openly gay man to hold
public office in California and finally to his assassination in 1978.
Lippa was commissioned to compose I Am Harvey Milk by The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus for its 35th anniversary in 2013.
I Am Harvey Milk is produced by Chorus Productions.
