Go inside the world premiere of new musical Cornelia Street, which began previews January 20 Off-Broadway at Atlantic Theater Company's Stage 2. The already extended run will open February 14 for a limited engagement through March 5.
Two-time Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz (My Fair Lady) leads the cast as Jacob Towney, a father dreaming of a great life for his daughter who finds out the West Village restaurant that has been his sanctuary is set to close. As he tries to save it, he also faces the neighborhood's phantom spirits—but, time and luck are both running out.
Butz is joined by George Abud (The Band’s Visit), Esteban Andres Cruz (Halfway Bitches Go Straight to Heaven), Gizel Jiménez (Netflix’s tick, tick… BOOM!), Jordan Lage (American Buffalo), Kevyn Morrow (Moulin Rouge! The Musical), Tony Award nominee Mary Beth Peil (Anastasia), Ben Rosenfield (Mrs. America), and Lena Pepe in her Off-Broadway debut.
Cornelia Street features a book by Tony winner Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) with music and lyrics by Mark Eitzel of American Music Club.
Tony-nominated director Neil Pepe (American Buffalo) helms the production, with choreography by two-time Bessie Award winner Hope Boykin, scenic design by Scott Pask, costume design by Linda Cho, lighting design by Stacey Derosier, sound design by Kai Harada, music direction by Chris Fenwick, orchestrations by John Clancy, music contractor Antoine Silverman, and casting by The Telsey Office's Rachel Hoffman. Jennifer Rogers serves as the production stage manager.
Surrounded by period-accurate, 19th-century holiday decorations lit via candlelight, the 70-minute production is based on Dickens' own script of the classic.
The National Asian American Theatre Company production will give a world premiere to a new modern verse translation of the Shakespeare play from Andrea Thome.
