The centerpiece of Second Stage Theater's Next Stage Festival has found its cast! 

The world premiere production of D.A. Mindell’s On the Evolutionary Function of Shame, which will take place in the new year at the The Irene Diamond Stage at The Pershing Square Signature Center, will begin previews February 12, 2025, with opening set for February 26.

Directed by Jess McLeod, the production will star Jordan Barbour (The Inheritance), Kayli Carter (I’ll Be Right There), Elizabeth Ramos (On That Day In Amsterdam), Imani Russell (How to Dance in Ohio), Cody Sloan (Seven Deadly Sins), and Ryan Jamaal Swain (Pose). 

On the Evolutionary Function of Shame is an exploration of identity, family, and the courage it takes to live authentically. Centering on the relationship between Adam (a transgender man expecting a child) and his twin sister, Eve (a scientist), their complex relationship between the pair comes to a head when Eve offers her brother cutting-edge prenatal services, with neither fully grasping the ramifications of her offer.

The production will feature scenic design by You-Shin Chen, costume design by Hahnji Jang, lighting design by Barbara Samuels, sound design by Bailey Trierweiler and casting by The Telsey Office's Charlie Hano and Karyn Casl.

On The Evolutionary Function Of Shame is available as part of a subscription package with Cult of Love by Leslye Headland and directed by Trip Cullman, Purpose by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and directed by Phylicia Rashad, and Lunar Eclipse by Donald Margulies and directed by Kate Whoriskey
