Check out photos of opening night for Will Arbery's Evanston Salt Costs Climbing, making its New York premiere Off-Broadway at The Pershing Square Signature Center. The New Group season opener began previews October 26 in the Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre for a run through December 14.
Set in Evanston, Illinois, where winters keep getting worse, salt truck drivers Peter and Basil battle the ice and snow and pass the time with jokes and stories. Their boss Maiworm has noble visions of new green technology that would make their jobs obsolete, but there may be a more terrifying warning calling out from under the roads.
Starring in the cast are Quincy Tyler Bernstine (Ruined, Mary Seacole), Jeb Kreager (Mare of Easttown, Heroes ofthe Fourth Turning), Ken Leung (Industry, Lost), and Rachel Sachnoff (Evanston Salt Costs Climbing at White Heron Theatre).
Danya Taymor directs the production, which features scenic design by Matt Saunders, costume design by Sarafina Bush, lighting design by Isabella Byrd, sound design by Mikaal Sulaiman, voice and text coaching by Gigi Buffington, and casting by Judy Henderson. The production stage manager is Rachel Denise April, and the assistant stage manager is Stephen Varnado.
Arbery previously penned Corsicana, which played at Playwrights Horizons earlier this year, and Heroes ofthe Fourth Turning, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
Surrounded by period-accurate, 19th-century holiday decorations lit via candlelight, the 70-minute production is based on Dickens' own script of the classic.
The National Asian American Theatre Company production will give a world premiere to a new modern verse translation of the Shakespeare play from Andrea Thome.
