New York Theatre Company will make its Off-Broadway debut this summer with a revival of Sophie Treadwell's Machinal.
Directed by Amy Marie Seidel (Here There Are Blueberries), performances are scheduled for June 7–July 3 at New York City Center Stage II.
The cast will feature Katherine Winter, Temidayo Amay, Sam Im, Kimberly Immanuel, Soph Metcalf, Shelley Mitchell, Alice Reys, Veronica Simpson, Hannah Snow, Michael Verre, Alex Lauren, and Annaliese Wilbur.
Inspired by the infamous 1926 case of Ruth Snyder—a woman sent to the electric chair for murdering her husband—Machinal follows
this woman’s rebellion against a world of crushing conformity, where
passion, desperation, and defiance collide in a shocking act of
violence.
Seidel's reimagined production amplifies the mechanical rhythm and expressionism in Treadwell’s text through an underscoring of tap dance and heightened movement created by choreographer Madison Hilligoss.
The creative team also includes lighting designer Colleen Doherty, costume designer Hahnji Jang, sound designer Brittany Harris, scenic designer Rochele Mac, and dramaturg Asha Devi. Bennett Theatricals is the general manager.
NYTC is committed to reviving classic texts with inventive, socially conscious interpretations.
