Off-Broadway's DRAG: The Musical is getting a live cast album, to release April 25 via PEG Records/Warner. The release will capture the current cast, led by Alaska Thunderfuck as Kitty Galloway, Nick Adams as Alexis Gillmore, and Adam Pascal as Tom Hutchinson.
The album will be produced by Liza Minnelli (also a producer of the Off-Broadway run) and show co-creator Tomas Costanza, with Nicholas Kaiser serving as executive producer.
"From the moment I got involved with Drag: The Musical, I knew it was something special—bold … brave … bursting with heart and music that is all about love. The songs here will make you laugh and cry,” says Minnelli in a statement. “This entire experience and adventure helps you find yourself. Producing this exquisite live album with Tomas is a joy, because he’s a genius surrounded by a brilliant cast and company, and because it captures that electric energy you only get in a theatre full of love, laughter, and lashes. This is a fabulous family show. It celebrates childhood innocence, adult tsuris, and gorgeous glitter! Darling, this cast sings their faces off—and I couldn’t be prouder to help bring this art into the world."
“KISS's Alive II and Cheap Trick’s Live at Budokan were everything to me when I was a kid,” adds Costanza. “Those live albums made it feel like the concert was happening right in my bedroom—loud and messy. That’s exactly what rock ’n’ roll is supposed to be. So when Liza and I started working on the DRAG: The Musical cast album, we knew we wanted to bring that same kind of energy. No overdubs, no polish—just the raw excitement of the show, captured live and delivered straight to your phone like you’re right there in the front row.”
The musical is playing New World Stages through April 27, which will cap a 215-performance, 24-preview run after opening October 21, 2024. The Off-Broadway bow follows two earlier runs in Los Angeles, and producers say a London production is coming next.
Written by RuPaul's Drag Race star Alaska, Costanza, and Ashley Gordon, the show follows two rival drag bars, each fighting for survival while dealing with financial troubles. Spencer Liff is directing and choreographing.
“I’m so excited about this live album," says Alaska. "The vocals kick ass, and the crowd couldn’t be more amazing. It’s just like being in the audience. I’m especially excited about 'One of the Boys' because this is the first-ever recording of this song and it’s one of my favorites. Thank you to everyone in the cast and crew who made this amazing album possible!”
Along with Alaska, Adams, and Pascal, the current cast also includes Eddie Korbich as Drunk Jerry, Jan Sport as Savannah St. James, Jujubee as The Tigress, Lagoona Bloo as Tuna Turner, Luxx Noir London as Popcorn, Tamika Lawrence as Dixie Coxworth, J. Elaine Marcos as Gloria Schmidt and Rita LaRitz, and Nick Laughlin as Puss Puss DuBois. Beau Coddou and Dylan Patterson share the role of Brendan Hutchinson.
The ensemble includes Cameron Mitchell Bell, Peli Naomi Woods, Kodiak Thompson, Nicholas Kraft, Teddy Wilson Jr., and Adrian Villegas.
