Off-Broadway News Casting Changes at Off-Broadway's The Play That Goes Wrong

Original Off-Broadway cast member Chris Lanceley has returned in a new role.

The Play That Goes Wrong

Off-Broadway's The Play That Goes Wrong has revealed a series of cast changes that went into effect July 25 at New World Stages.

Chris Lanceley, an original Off-Broadway company member who first played Jonathan in the long running comedy, has assumed the role of Chris Bean. Chris French now appears as Jonathan, and Russell Mernagh will join the company as Max through August 22 , when Adam Petherbridge will take over the role. Lanceley, French, and Petherbridge previously played their respective roles on the second national tour, and Mernagh is a new addition to the company.

They join a cast that also includes Brent Bateman as Robert, Ryan Vincent Anderson as Trevor, Ashley N. Hildreth as Annie, and Maggie Weston as Sandra. Rounding out the company as understudies are Damien Brett, Laura D'Andre, Ellie MacPherson, and Sid Solomon.

Co-written by Mischief company members Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields, The Play That Goes Wrong is a send-up of the theatre that introduces The Cornley University Drama Society. The company is attempting to put on a 1920s murder mystery, but as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong…does.

Directed by Matt DiCarlo, the Off-Broadway production opened February 20, 2019, after opening on Broadway April 2, 2017, at the Lyceum Theatre. The work features Tony-winning set design by Nigel Hook, costume design by Roberto Surace, lighting design by Jeremy Cunningham, and sound design by Beth Lake.

The Off-Broadway staging is produced by Kevin McCollum, J.J. Abrams, Kenny Wax, Stage Presence Ltd., Catherine Schreiber, Ken Davenport, Federman-Batchelder/deRoy-Brunish, Damian Arnold/TC Beech, Greenleaf Productions/Bard-Roth, Martian Entertainment/Jack Lane/John Yonover, and Lucas McMahon.
