Nonprofit organization Black Broadway Men, Inc., which previously announced two new programs for 2023, has shared details and opened applications for its BBM Playwriting Initiative.

Black male-identifying playwrights between the ages of 18 and 35 are invited to apply for the initiative, which will give the winner the opportunity to have a full rehearsal process and final 29 hour reading of their work. In preparation for the reading, the playwright will develop their work with a Black male-identifying writer who will mentor the winner through the writing process. Black Broadway Men, who will sponsor the reading, will also provide a director, production stage manager, sound engineer, and cast. The presentation is set to be held in New York City in April.

Applications are due by January 23, and a finalist will be announced February 1.

The first initiative, The BBM Mentorship Program, launched in December and will begin this month. The inaugural Mentorship Program helps four male-identifying Black creatives between the ages of 18 and 24 build careers and professional networks.

Black Broadway Men, Inc. was founded in 2020 by Broadway alum Anthony Wayne, James T. Lane (Kiss Me, Kate), Terence Archie (Company), Ahmad Simmons (West Side Story), Sir Brock Warren (Summer: The Donna Summer Musical), and Isaiah Josiah. The racial equality group is open to all self-identifying Black men who work on stage or behind the scenes in theatre and aims to provide a safe space for Black male theatre professionals.
