From stage to screen! Andrew Keenan-Bolger will direct the “fierce” coming-of-age short film Mikey’s Army with a script by Eric Ulloa (The Nana Project, Meet the Alphabeats).

The story follows 16-year-old Mikey Alvarez who finds himself questioning whether he should be honest about who he is. Feeling unprepared, he recruits an inspiring trio—a drag queen, a popstar, and an action film beau—to guide him. The short’s release date will be announced soon.

The Tuck Everlasting performer commented on the recent news via Instagram. “This week we’re officially starting production on a film I’m directing! @Ericulloa has written a beautiful script, @MikeysArmyFilm, celebrating queer teenage love. “

Nicholas Dantes (Station Eleven) leads the cast as Mikey, along with Broadway favorites Claybourne Elder and Krystina Alabado, best known for starring in Company and Mean Girls, respectively. Rounding out the cast is Shuga Cain (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Jennifer Sánchez (Submissions Only), and Timmy Thompson.

Keenan-Bolger is best known starring in the Broadway shows Newsies and Tuck Everlasting, and making appearances in the television series The Undoing, The Blacklist, and Looking. He also co-created and co-directed the web series Submissions Only.

The short is produced by Jamie Forshaw, Kyle Beckley (Submissions Only), Mike Mosallam (Breaking Fast), and Thomas Laub (Slave Play). Thomas Schumacher, Reyana Productions, and Drama Club Productions are executive producers.
