Santino Fontana, Eddie Cooper, Lilli Cooper, Jennifer Sánchez, and Lesli Margherita lead the cast of Red Bull Theater's benefit performance of the rock musical Your Own Thing, a musical adaptation of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, December 12 at Peter Norton Symphony Space. Gabriel Barre is at the helm.
The cast also includes Simon Pearl, Michael Pilato, and Vaden Thurgood, with special appearances from Kate Burton, Michael Cerveris, Robert Cuccioli, Tovah Feldshuh, Richard Kind, Ken Page, Patrick Page, Laila Robins, Jay O. Sanders, Mary Testa, John Douglas Thompson, Michael Urie, and Bruce Vilanch.
Adapted from Twelfth Night by Hal Hester and Danny Apolinar, Your Own Thing premiered at Off-Broadway's Orpheum Theater (current home to Stomp) in 1968, shortly after Hair made its debut down the street at the then-newly-built Public Theater. Both musicals would go on to become big hits of the rock musical genre, with Your Own Thing running for 933 performances before touring North America. In the years since, the success of Hair has all but eclipsed Your Own Thing's, with this evening's concert production a rare presentation of the seldom-produced work.
The benefit features a book adaptation by Donald Driver and music direction by Greg Pliska.
