Catching Fireflies, a new folk musical from writers Finnigan Faye and Adam Gloc, will make its world premiere at Off-Broadway's Players Loft Theater in 2025, with performances running January 9–26.
Subtitled A New Queer Musical, the work tracks six queer people stuck together in Philadelphia during the 2020 pandemic through the lens of a trans writer coming to terms with his identity. Faye and Gloc met in 2020 via a Facebook group for musicians, which gave spark to the musical as a pandemic project. The musical has been previously developed via workshops in 2021 and 2022, and an industry reading earlier this year. A concept album released in 2022 is available on streaming networks.
The cast will feature Abi Painter, Jenny Johnston, Bex Schuster, Gabbi McCarren, Regina Brown, Eli Wassertzug, Alyx Cassese, Pearle Shannon, Laney Yoo, Finn Delehanty, and Kaden Potak.
Faye is directing. The work features additional music and lyrics by James Rubino and Jenavive Banes, and is being produced by Zoe Belle Gronner and Haley Dorrance.
“Having this kind of representation is so important, now more than ever,” says Faye in a statement. “Growing up, I was never able to resonate or relate with a queer character that felt authentic to my experiences as a young trans individual. So writing a piece inspired by the lives of real queer people is so important to me, and I want to be able to give audiences the representation I never had. I'm so grateful for our team, the cast, and the opportunity to share a story we feel so passionate about."
