Film & TV News Wicked Film Is Available to Digitally Rent or Own Starting December 31

The Jon M. Chu-directed film is now the highest-grossing adaptation of a stage musical in box-office history.

Wicked fans have even more reasons to rejoycify this holiday season: The first half of the two-part film adaptation of the international hit musical is available on video on demand beginning December 31.

The motion picture, which arrived in cinemas November 22, is now available for digital rental or purchase via Fandango at Home, Apple TV, Prime Video, YouTube, Verizon, Spectrum, and more. On Fandango, the film is priced $29.99 to purchase or $19.99 to rent. The digital version also includes a sing-along version of the film, a 40-minute making-of featurette, audio commentary from director Jon M. Chu and stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, and deleted scenes. Click here for additional information.

According to Amazon, a physical release on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray is set for June 30, 2025.

The film continues to light up movie theatres around the world as well; to date, the movie musical has brought in over $634 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film adaptation of a stage musical in box-office history.

On December 20, Universal released a sing-along version of the film adaptation's hit soundtrack, featuring the full backing tracks from the film, including "Defying Gravity," "Dancing Through Life," "Popular," and more. The sing-along soundtrack is now available on all streaming platforms.

Featuring songs by Stephen Schwartz, a screenplay by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, and designs by Tony winner Paul Tazewell, the Wicked films star Erivo and Grammy winner Grande as, respectively, Elphaba and Glinda. The second half of the two-part adaptation will arrive November 21, 2025.

The cast also features West End Company Olivier winner and Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, SpongeBob SquarePants star Ethan Slater as Boq, Emmy winner Peter Dinklage as Dr. Dillamond, 2023 Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, and newcomer Marissa Bode as Nessarose.

Stage and screen star Keala Settle, SNL's Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, Aaron Teoh, and Colin Michael Carmichael also play roles new to the musical's screen version, with Settle as Miss Coddle, Carmichael as Professor Nikidik, and Yang, James, and Teoh as Shiz students Pfannee, ShenShen, and Avaric, respectively.

Wicked, injecting a new backstory onto the classic tale The Wizard of Oz, debuted on Broadway in 2003 and continues to be an audience favorite at the Gershwin Theatre. Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, the musical features music and lyrics by Schwartz and a book by Holzman. The original cast included Tony winners Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively. The musical is now the fourth longest-running production in Broadway history.

The show won 2004 Tony Awards for Best Actress in a Musical (Menzel), Best Costume Design (Susan Hilferty), and Best Scenic Design (Eugene Lee).
