The production, which is directed by Jo Bonney, will officially open June 4. The limited engagement marks Scheer's return to Second Stage, where her play Our Dear Dead Drug Lord premiered in 2019 in a co-production with WP Theater.
Breaking the Story centers on a foreign war correspondent named Marina. After returning from a particularly bloody conflict, she considers what a life of peace would look like, and what it would take to move forward from the trauma she has witnessed.
The production stars Tala Ashe (English), Geneva Carr (Bull), Julie Halston (Hairspray, Gypsy), Louis Ozawa (Jack Ryan), Gabrielle Policano (Baby Girl), Matthew Saldívar (Bernhardt/Hamlet), and Maggie Siff (Billions).
Filmed in 2023, the one-night-only event featured Brian Stokes Mitchell, Audra McDonald, Peter Friedman, and more from the Ahrens and Flaherty musical's original cast.
Surrounded by period-accurate, 19th-century holiday decorations lit via candlelight, the 70-minute production is based on Dickens' own script of the classic.
