At London's Lyric Hammersmith, Nina Segal's (O, Island!, Hanna) adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Person of Szechwan opens its run April 20. Previews began April 15 for the English Touring Theatre and Sheffield Theatres co-production, which is set to run through May 13.
Shen Te is trying her hardest just to get by in the city. When three gods reward her with life-changing money, she grabs the opportunity to establish the stability she's always wanted by opening a tobacco shop. But what will her own survival in a society ruled by capitalism cost?
Starring are Leon Wan, Nick Blakeley, Melody Brown, Aidan Cheng, Jon Chew, Callum Coates, Togo Igawa, Suni La, Camille Mallet de Chauny, Louise Mai Newberry, Tim Samuels, Ami Tredrea, and Leon Wan.
Directed by Anthony Lau (ROCK, Anna Karenina), the show features design by Georgia Lowe, lighting design by Jessica Hung Han Yun, sound design by Alexandra Faye Braithwaite, musical direction and voice coaching by Lauren Dyer, movement direction by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, music composed by DJ Walde, dramaturgy by Jennifer Bakst, and literal translation by Susy Hingley. Jacob Sparrow serves as casting director.
2023 marks the 80th anniversary of Brecht’s play. The show does come with a content warning for strong language and references to suicide.
