Jamaal Fields-Green, who is currently starring in the title role of the national tour of MJ the Musical, will take over the same part in the West End production next year.
Fields-Green will succeed Myles Frost, who created the role on Broadway to Tony-winning effect, beginning January 14, 2025, at London's Prince Edward Theatre.
“I’m deeply humbled and honored to have the opportunity to perform in this show and role here in London," stated Fields-Green, who has the distinction of being the only performer to have played the title role in three global productions (on Broadway, in the national tour, and London). “Ever since I made my debut in the West End earlier this year [Fields-Green played a brief stint in the musical this past April], something in the city has been calling me back. London—I’m excited to share my artistry and make some magic with you in this beautiful city. I hope to see you at the theatre, I promise you’re not going to want to miss it. Let’s party!”
It was also announced that beginning December 31, Jordan Markus will take over the title role in the musical's national tour. Markus, an original cast member of the first national touring company, will be joined by DeAundre Woods, who will play the role twice a week as the MJ–Alternate.
MJ continues on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre starring Elijah Rhea Johnson as the late pop singer. A German production plays th Stage Theater an der Elbe, Hamburg, starring Benét Monteiro. The international hit musical will open in Sydney, Australia, in 2025.
MJ, which began Broadway previews December 6, 2021, prior to an official opening February 1, 2022, features a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and a score made up of some of the most popular songs in recording history. Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon directs and choreographs.
The musical also has sets by Derek McLane, lighting by Natasha Katz, costumes by Paul Tazewell, sound design by Gareth Owen, projection design by Peter Nigrini, hair and wig design by Charles LaPointe, music direction by Jason Michael Webb, musical supervision by David Holcenberg, and orchestrations by Holcenberg and Webb. Casting is by Rachel Hoffman of The Telsey Office.
The show took home four 2022 Tony Awards in total, also including Best
Choreography, Best Lighting Design in a Musical, and Best Sound Design
in a Musical.
