On demand streaming of Red Bull Theater's 2019 all-female production Mac Beth finishes May 29. With a virtual ticket, audiences can see Erica Schmidt's re-interpretation of Shakespeare's Macbeth, which she also directed.
Seven girls meet in an empty lot to perform Shakespeare's Macbeth. Against the backdrop of an American urban wasteland, the line between reality and fantasy blurs as they fall into the unchecked passions of their characters and discover what's done cannot be undone. Schmidt based the reinterpretation in part on the Slender Man and Skylar Neese murder cases.
"All of us at Red Bull are thrilled to be able to share Erica Schmidt’s visionary and contemporary take on Macbeth with these outstanding actors," said Red Bull Theater's Artistic Director Jesse Berger in a statement. "This production was a highlight (and audience favorite) from our last season prior to the pandemic shutdown, and it’s very exciting to be able to share it with audiences everywhere in this way.”
In 2019, the production ran a limited engagement at Off-Broadway's Lucille Lortel Theater starring Isabelle Fuhrman, AnnaSophia Robb, Sharlene Cruz, Sophie Kelly-Hedrick, Ismenia Mendes, Lily Santiago, and Ayana Workman. It earned a New York Times Critic's Pick, three Drama Desk nominations, and a Lucille Lortel nomination. The play originally premiered at Seattle Repertory Theater.
