Each year, Miscast proves to be one of the industry's favorite concert events, featuring Broadway stars performing songs from roles in which they might not be traditionally cast. The annual gala for MCC Theater was held April 15 at Hammerstein Ballroom and honored Jason Robert Brown, whose latest show The Connector recently premiered at MCC. Nicole Suazo, MCC Youth Company alum, was also honored.
Of course, you can't honor a three-time Tony-winning composer without singing a few of his tunes. So, before the the main Miscast concert began, some of Brown's past stars serenaded the audience with a few of songs from the shows they were in—but not from roles they played. It is Miscast, after all. Here's what they sang:
- Andréa Burns performed "She Cries" from Songs for a New World
- Hannah Cruz performed "See Yourself" from The Connector
- Alex Joseph Grayson performed "You Don't Know This Man" from Parade
- Ben Platt performed "I Can Do Better Than That" from The Last Five Years
- Kelli O'Hara performed "Wondering" from The Bridges of Madison County
- Steven Pasquale performed "Always Better" from The Bridges of Madison County
Following dinner, more of Broadway's best took the stage for the official Miscast program. Take a look at that set list below:
- Nicholas Christopher (replacing Wayne Brady) performed "One Night Only" from Dreamgirls
- Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer performed "Franklin Shepherd, Inc." from Merrily We Roll Along
- Mykal Kilgore performed "Stars and the Moon" from Songs for a New World
- Lauren Patten performed "One Song Glory" (on acoustic guitar) from Rent
- Brian d'Arcy James performed "I Miss the Mountains" from Next to Normal
- Joy Woods and Ryan Vasquez performed "Losing My Mind" from Follies
