The film opened in limited release in November at selected theatres around the U.S., but not in New York. The film had its world premiere July 26 as part of the Stony Brook Film Festival in New York.

Wilkof, who directed the film, previously told Playbill.com, "No Pay, Nudity is about a middle aged actor (played by Gabriel Byrne), who has lost his way, and how he relies on his friends, who he hangs out with in the Equity Lounge (Nathan Lane, Frances Conroy and Boyd Gaines). He finds his way back to what he loves when he returns to his hometown in Dayton, OH, to play the fool in King Lear, and connects with an old girlfriend (Valerie Mahaffey)."

Ethan Sandler wrote the screenplay based on a story by Wilkof, who appeared on Broadway this fall in Holiday Inn. The cast also includes Donna Murphy, J. Smith Cameron, Jon Michael Hill, Zoe Perry, Mark Blum, and the late J.R. Horne, among others.
