Disney, which had a hit with its combination live action and CGI remake of The Jungle Book, and which is planning to roll out a similar Beauty and the Beast next year, has announced that it is planning a combination live/CGI film remake of the animated classic The Lion King, according to Deadline.com.

A musical based on the same property has been running on Broadway since 1998.

The Jungle Book director Jon Favreu will helm the project. Disney said on its website: “Like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King will include songs from the animated film.” There was no immediate word on whether songs from the stage version would also be used.

The film earned more than $1 billion for Disney and won Oscars for the Elton John song Can You Feel the Love Tonight and original score.
