Hamilton songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda will collaborate with composer Alan Menken on a live-action film adaptation of Menken's hit animated film The Little Mermaid for Disney, according to Deadline.com.
The film would include songs from the 1989 animated film (with lyrics by the late Howard Ashman), much of which was included in the 2008 Broadway musical adaptation. Deadline reports that Tony and Pulitzer winner Miranda will also co-write music with multiple Oscar winner Menken, whose prolific output has included Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Newsies, Little Shop of Horrors, Pocahontas, Galavant, Sausage Party and other movies and shows.
Marc Platt will produce the film along with Miranda, who is already involved in two other Disney projects, the forthcoming animated film Moana and the sequel, Mary Poppins Returns.
No filming schedule, casting or release date were announced. Deadline reports that Disney is still working out details of Miranda's involvement in the project. Though he will not write the script, he reportedly will supervise the story.
