The New York City Ballet has announced its 2022-2023 season at Lincoln Center, which will include world premieres by NYCB Resident Choreographer and Artistic Advisor Justin Peck and Christopher Wheeldon.
Peck's new work, set to the music of Aaron Copland, will make its world premiere January 26, 2023. Though it will be his 23rd work for the company, it will be his first full evening of original work for NYCB. Peck choreographed the Broadway revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel, ultimately winning the 2018 Tony Award for his choreography. He also recently choreographed Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated film adaptation of West Side Story.
NYCB's Spring Gala, scheduled for May 4, 2023, will feature Wheeldon's new ballet in its world premiere as well as Peck's The Times Are Racing. Wheeldon was NYCB's first-ever Resident Choreographer and will also be creating his 23rd work for the company. For Broadway, he choreographed ballet sequences for the 2002 production of The Sweet Smell of Success. More recently, he directed and choreographed the original Broadway production of An American in Paris, for which he won the Tony Award for Best Choreography, and currently serves as the director and choreographer of MJ the Musical.
The upcoming season, which will open September 20 and run through May 28, 2023, will also feature a performance of Jerome Robbins' West Side Story Suite. Principal dancer Sterling Hyltin has also announced he will retire from NYCB after 20 years and will perform a farewell performance. In total, the season will include 48 ballets, including six world premieres, and choreography from 10 choreographers.
“The programming for New York City Ballet’s 2022-2023 season contains a rich assortment of the company’s heritage repertory of landmark works, as well as exciting premieres,” said NYCB Associate Artistic Director Wendy Whelan in a statement. “Justin Peck will be making his first-ever full-evening work, an exploration of the music of Aaron Copland featuring set designs by renowned visual artist Jeffrey Gibson.”
