Awards & Juliet's Lorna Courtney Wins Clive Barnes Award

New York City Ballet's Victor Abreu also won the honor, which includes a cash award of $5,000.

2023 Tony-nominated & Juliet star Lorna Courtney was named a winner of the 13th Annual Clive Barnes Awards for Dance and Theatre at a May 22 ceremony at NYC's Florence Gould Hall. The honor includes an unrestricted award of $5,000.

Winning alongside Courtney was New York City Ballet's Victor Abreu. Both wins were adjudicated from live performances given in NYC in 2022, and by a committee of arts journalists and industry professionals.

Also honored May 22 were the awards' finalists. For theatre, that list included Kennedy Kanagawa (Into the Woods), Julia Lester (Into the Woods), and Solea Pfeiffer (Almost Famous); while dance finalists included Christian Burse (Complexions Contemporary Ballet), Devon Louis (Paul Taylor Dance Company), and Andrew Robare (American Ballet Theatre).

"Lorna and Victor represent outstanding young talent in their disciplines,” say Clive & Valerie Barnes Foundation Co-Presidents Holly Jones and Lloyd Mayor in a joint statement. “Their success has been a result of dedicated work and love of their art form. The Foundation is proud to recognize and support their talents and all the nominees in each category.”

Past winners have included Nina Arianda, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Rob McClure, Andrew Burnap, Celia Rose Gooding, and Justin Cooley.

Both Courtney and Lester are currently nominated for 2023 Tony Awards, with Courtney competing in the Leading Actress in a Musical category and Lester in the Featured Actress in a Musical category.
