The stage musical Mystic Pizza is hitting the road, with a North American tour now set to launch in January 2025. The production will open at Vero Beach, Florida's Riverside Theatre, with future stops including Tampa, St. Paul, and West Palm Beach. As previously announced, the musical will also play a four-week run at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse.
This edition of the musical, which features a jukebox score of '80s and '90s hits and a book by Sandy Rustin (Clue, The Cottage), premiered at California's La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts earlier this year. A 2021 world premiere run at Ogunquit Playhouse also featured original songs written by Melissa Etheridge, while a separate staging with a different creative team played Engeman Theater in 2022.
Casey Hushion will direct the forthcoming tour, after helming the 2021 world premiere and the La Mirada staging. Her creative team from the La Mirada run will reunite for the traveling production, including choreographer Connor Gallagher, arranger and orchestrator Carmel Dean, music director Kristin Stowell, scenic designer Nate Bertone, lighting designer Ryan J. O'Gara, and costume designer Jennifer Caprio.
Casting and additional tour stops are to be announced.
Adapted from the 1988 film, the musical follows three working-class young women as they navigate the complex expectations of life, love, and family in a small-town pizza joint serving everyone from townies to the privileged country club set. The jukebox score includes such favorites as "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," "Addicted to Love," "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," and "Take My Breath Away."
McCoy Rigby Entertainment, Lively McCabe Entertainment, and Riverside Theatricals are producing the tour, with Tom McCoy and Michael Barra serving as executive producers. The production is being presented by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals.
