From Bach to Bacharach, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week:
Carnegie Hall’s exploration of the music of the Weimar Republic continues March 23 with Meow Meow in Sequins and Satire, Divas and Disruptors: The Wild Women of the Weimar Republic, a tribute to Anita Berber, Lotte Lenya, Valeska Gert, Blandine Ebinger, Margo Lion, Claire Waldoff, Marlene Dietrich, and more. Meow Meow will be joined by pianist and cellist Isaac Hayward, violinist Nicholas Crosa, bassist Dan Witton, and percussionist David Berger.
The American Symphony Orchestra will perform Arnold Schoenberg’s grand cantata Gurrelieder March 22 at Carnegie Hall. Soprano Felicia Moore, mezzo-soprano Krysty Swann, tenor Dominic Armstrong, tenor Brenton Ryan, bass-baritone Carsten Wittmoser, and bass-baritone Alan Held are the soloists. Leon Botstein will conduct the orchestra of over 200 musicians.
Carnegie Hall will also host this week performances from Ensemble Connect (March 18), pianist Alexander Malofeev (March 19), Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester (March 21), Quatuor Van Kuijk (March 21), and the New England Symphonic Ensemble (March 23).
The Mark Morris Dance Group brings The Look of Love to the Brooklyn Academy of Music March 20-23. The work is choreographed by Morris to the songs of Burt Bacharach, arranged by Ethan Iverson, and sung by Marcy Harriell. The piece includes costume and production design by Isaac Mizrahi, and lighting design by Nicole Pearce.
Trombonist Joseph Alessi joins the New York Philharmonic to perform Tan Dun’s Trombone Concerto at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall March 21-24. The program also includes Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, and the world premiere of Joel Thompson’s To See the Sky, a New York Philharmonic co-commission with the American Composers Forum, Atlanta Symphony, Aspen Music Festival and School, and Bravo! Vail Music Festival. NY Phil music director Jaap van Zweden will conduct.
Violinist Mark Peskanov and cellist Martti Rousi will perform at BargeMusic March 22, giving selections from Bach’s cello suites and violin sonatas and partitas, as well as duets by Mozart, Haydn, Sibelius, Paganini, and Handel. The weekend at BargeMusic will continue March 23 with cellist Arkady Orlovsky and pianist Tamara Orlovsky performing works by Schumann, Bizet, Tchaikovsky, Ravel, and Rimsky-Korsakov; and March 24 with pianist Jeffrey Swann performing Schumann’s Fantasy in C major, Op. 17, and Chopin’s 24 Preludes, Op. 28.
Soprano Elena Sitkhina and mezzo-soprano Maria Barakova join the cast of Verdi’s La Forza del Destino at the Metropolitan Opera March 21, filling the roles of Leonora and Preziosilla, being vacated by Lise Davidsen and Judit Kutasi respectively. Performances of La Forza del Destino continue with the new cast through March 29. Performances also continue at the Met of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, and Puccini’s Turandot, the latter of which wraps up this run of performances March 23, before it returns to the Met stage in May.
