Rudetsky, also featured on piano, is joined by Sharon Catherine Brown (Effie in the tour of Dreamgirls, Joseph…), Darius de Haas (Rent, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Natalie Wachen (Rent), and Tony nominee Lilli Cooper (Tootsie, Spring Awakening, upcoming The Cottage).
The performers will share their personal Dreamgirls stories and perform songs from the musical, including "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," “One Night Only,” “I Am Changing,” “Move,” “Fake Your Way to the Top,” and the classic Act One fight scene.
In 2001 Rudetsky mounted a concert version of Dreamgirls—featuring Lillias White, Audra McDonald, Heather Headley, Billy Porter, Norm Lewis, and de Haas—that raised $1 million for the Entertainment Community Fund. The concert was recorded and released on a double CD by Nonesuch records.
Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen's Dreamgirls won six Tony Awards in its 1982 Broadway premiere. The late Michael Bennett took home the award for Best Choreography alongside collaborator Michael Peters. Jennifer Holliday memorably created the role of Effie to Tony-winning effect, stopping the show nightly with "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." The 2006 film, adapted and directed by Bill Condon, earned Jennifer Hudson the Golden Globe and Academy Awards for her portrayal of Effie.
