Broadway News Broadway's For Colored Girls... Announces Extension After Previously Moving Closing Date

The 2022 Tony-nominated revival had originally been scheduled to run through the summer.

The 2022 Tony-nominated Broadway revival of Ntozake Shange's for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf has announced a two-week extension following an earlier announcement that the show would close May 22. The show, originally scheduled to complete its run August 14, will now continue through June 5. 

The new closing date follows seven Tony nominations that the production received earlier this week, including Best Revival of a Play. for colored girls... has also received a grassroots ticket initiative campaign via social media in which people are purchasing and donating tickets to audience members who otherwise may not be able to afford a ticket. Producer and writer Ayanna Prescod has led the effort.

The cast features Kenita R. Miller, nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play, Amara Granderson, Tendayi Kuumba, Okwui Okpokwasili, Stacey Sargeant, Alexandria Wailes, and D. Woods. Read reviews for the revival here.

Directing the show in her Broadway debut is Camille A. Brown, who previously choreographed the 2019 Off-Broadway production at The Public Theater. She earned two Tony nominations for her work, Best Direction of a Play and Best Choreography. She also makes history as the first Black woman to serve as choreographer and director on a Broadway production in more than 65 years. Along with Brown, costume designer Sarafina Bush earned a Tony nod as well as lighting designer Jiyoun Chang and sound designer Justin Ellington

The creative team also features set designer Myung Hee Cho, projection designer Aaron Rhyne, hair designer Cookie Jordan, music director Deah Love Harriott, music coordinator Tia Allen, associate director Christina Franklin, and associate choreographer Maleek Washington. The production showcases original music by Martha Redbone and Aaron Whitby.

Also serving on the creative team are Bernita Robinson as production stage manager and lark hacksaw as assistant stage manager. Erica Jensen of Calleri Jensen Davis cast the production, and Hudson Theatricals provides production supervision.

Following seven women, Ntozake Shange's choreopoem explores their stories and how they find strength in each other’s humor and passion through a fusion of poetry, dance, music, and song. For colored girls...made its Broadway premiere at the Booth Theatre in 1976 and received a Tony nomination for Best Play.
