The American premiere of Golden Shield begins previews at Manhattan Theatre Club April 26, ahead of its May 17 opening at New York City Center – Stage I. The play is written by Anchuli Felicia King (White Pearl) and features direction by May Adrales (Vietgone).
The cast includes Cindy Cheung (Wild Goose Dream), Fang Du, Kristen Hung (Buddhas Are Screaming in China), Daniel Jenkins, Michael C. Liu, Max Gordon Moore (The Nap), Ruibo Qian (Bull in a China Shop), and Gillian Saker (tick, tick…BOOM!).
The legal drama follows American lawyer Julie Chen and her class-action lawsuit involving a technology corporation and the Chinese government. She hires her sister Eva as her Mandarin translator and the two find themselves having to set aside their past differences. In 2019, the work ran in Melbourne Theatre Company's Southbank Theatre.
The show’s creative team includes scenic design by dots, costume design by Sara Ryung Clement, lighting design by Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew, original music and sound design by Charles Coes and Nathan A. Roberts, hair and wig design by Tom Watson, casting by Andrea Zee, stage management by Michael Medina, voice coaching by Ka-Ling Cheung, and Alyssa K. Howard as production stage manager.
