Every day this December, Playbill will be getting into the spirit of the season with 31 Days of Holiday Cheer—sharing some of our favorite music videos from Broadway stars. Check in daily for classic tunes and new songs about Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year's. And we even have some surprise new, original Playbill videos to share.
Unlike most of composer Frank Loesser's Golden Age songs, "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" was not written for a Broadway or film musical. It was first recorded in 1947 by one of the chart-topping songstresses of the mid-40s, Margaret Whiting. It's since been covered by dozens of huge artists, including Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand, The Carpenters, Rod Stewart, Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Kacey Musgraves, Harry Connick, Jr. and many more.
Today, though, we're sharing a performance of the tune from Broadway favorite Andy Karl. It was recorded live at Feinstein's/54 Below during the 2016 concert Legally Bound. We're pretty sure Karl is directing the sentiment to his wife Orfeh, with whom he shared the cabaret stage. Though it's nice to dream that he might be singing it to us, as well. Karl will next be leading the cast of Groundhog Day in Melbourne, Australia. Karl originated the role of Phil Conners, the weatherman stuck in a time loop, on Broadway and in the West End. Performances begin January 24.
