A New York woman is suing the Broadway musical Cats for $6 million, claiming she was assaulted and battered when the actor playing Rum Tum Tugger tugged on her a little too hard and gyrated his pelvis at her during a performance.

Randy Graff is the epitome of the maxim "less is more." Graff is not a showy performer. She doesn't strut around the stage or gesticulate wildly. She simply stands, sings and beguiles. In fact, two of the highlights of All Girl Band: The Songs of David Zippel, which I caught this past Monday evening at the Public Theater's Joe's Pub, were Graff's renditions of "How Can I Win" and "You Can Always Count On Me." It's not surprising that her version of City of Angels' "You Can Always Count On Me" was flawlessly delivered with measured doses of comic sarcasm (okay, she flubbed a lyric, but it hardly mattered), for she did win a Tony for her role in that musical. However, what was unexpected was her simple, yet affecting version of The Goodbye Girl's "How Can I Win." I've always enjoyed the Hamlisch/Zippel score for that ill fated musical (it was the book that needed work), and Graff managed to bring that sweet song to life, adding a few vocal inflections and slides that worked wonderfully. I'd love her to record that song; in fact, it would be great if the entire evening of Zippel tunes were recorded.

The 2002 Helen Hayes Awards, presented May 6, spread the wealth around DC's resident theatres, honoring the Signature and Shakespeare Theatres with three wins each, as well as pairs of citations to the Studio, Rep Stage, Arena Stage and the Round House. The Helen Hayes Awards were handed out to resident and non-resident theatrical productions and theatre folk May 7 in Washington, D.C., with Side Show and The Glass Menagerie taking the major resident awards, and James Joyce's The Dead and Judith Light in Wit among non-resident honorees. The Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play, a major category, went to A House in the Country by Peter Coy at Charter Theatre.

For the Washington, D.C., theatre community, the night of nights is May 7, when winners of the 2001 Helen Hayes Awards, recognizing excellence in resident and non-resident D.C.-area theatre, are announced at the Kennedy Center.

The Midtown International Theatre Festival (MITF) will close Sept 3 after a successful three-week engagement, Aug. 9-Sept. 3. This past week, the Festival's last (Aug. 27 - Sept. 3), three of the four MITF venues have hosted “Best of the Fest” performances featuring the most popular shows of the series.
