Last season, Polly Bergen provided one of, if not the, most exciting moments of the Broadway theatre season. Bergen, of course, starred as Carlotta Campion in the Roundabout Theater Company's revival of Follies, earning a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her work. Although her stage time was minimal, her rendering of Stephen Sondheim's show-business survival anthem, "I'm Still Here," was the highlight of the show and one of the most powerful moments of the season. Bergen began the Sondheim anthem slowly, singing “Good times and bum times . . .” to the other Follies guests, but by the end of the song, she stood alone, centerstage, belting out in her rich, smokey tones, “Lord knows at least I was there, and I’m heeeeere, look who’s heeeeere, I’m still heeeere!” Her rendition was so thrillingly sung and acted, so riveting, that you didn't notice the stage empty of its inhabitants during the song. It was one of those rare, exciting, spine-chilling moments.

Our Tony-winning Evita gal, Patti LuPone, has been very busy lately. While performing her Matters of the Heart concert act at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater — to rave reviews, mind you — La LuPone filmed a role opposite Robert De Niro in the new Michael Caton-Jones film, City By the Sea, in which she plays De Niro’s ex-wife. In January she filmed an episode of “Touched By An Angel,” which just aired this past Sunday night, and she is currently starring in a new TNT movie, Monday Night Mayhem, with John Turturro. Turturro portrays the late Howard Cosell in this TV-film, which tells the story of the creation of ABC’s Monday Night Football, and LuPone stars as Cosell’s wife. And, earlier in the fall LuPone filmed a role in David Mamet’s Heist opposite Gene Hackman . . . For those of you who can’t wait for these screen appearances, the Tony and Olivier Award-winning actress has also just released a whole new slew of concert dates, which follow:

The Royal Shakespeare Company's revival of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, which ran at Stratford-upon-Avon's Royal Shakespeare Theatre through May 2, is transferring directly to the West End's Noel Coward Theatre, where it opens officially May 13 (following previews that began May 9), for a ten-week run through July 18.
