DESCRIPTION

Northern Stage, a LORT D 240 seat regional theater in White River Junction, VT, seeks an experienced Scenic Artist/Carpenter to join the full-time staff. Northern Stage produces a mainstage season, an education season, a New Works festival, and 4-6 other events year-round. This position reports directly to the Technical Director and works closely with the Props Manager and other production department heads to help execute all elements of scenic fabrication and paint treatment.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Execute all paint techniques needed for in-house built scenery including carving, faux finishes, texturing, and drop painting. Do any touch ups and notes necessary for outsourced scenery during the load-in and tech process.
- Complete any paint and scenic notes as necessary during the run of a show.
- Keep the Paint Shop and associated work areas clean and safe. Maintain tools and equipment necessary for the Paint Shop.
- Purchase and track all paints-related supplies for each production with a keen eye on budget.
- Assist the Technical Director with construction of any in-house built scenery.
- Assist with changeover between productions, primarily focused on scenery and paints but helping additional departments as necessary.
- Serve as a Deck Carpenter on run crews of shows as needed based on the scale of production.
- Assist the Props Manager with purchasing, fabrication, and alterations.
- Provide support for events outside the mainstage and education seasons.
- Support other production departments as needed.


Qualifications:
- Two years of experience in professional shops. A combination of education and professional experience will be considered.
- Knowledge of theatrical scenic painting, surface treatments, and building techniques.
- Ability to read construction drawings and paint elevations. Experience with AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks a plus.
- Proficiency in color matching, carving, faux finishes, texturing, marbling, and wood graining.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office & Google Suite.
- Excellent communication and organization skills. Experience managing and adhering to budgets.
- Working knowledge of theatrical safety conventions, OSHA regulations, rigging, and fire codes.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to approach challenges collaboratively.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools.
- Rigging, welding, and steel fabrication experience a plus.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a box truck.
- Comfortable working at heights in excess of 20 feet in a lift and on a tension mesh grid.
- Ability to safely lift 75 lbs.
- BA or BFA in technical theater a plus.

Job Type Full time, with some nights and weekends required

Contract Dates: 7/8/2024 - 5/26/2025 with possibility for renewal

Compensation: $39,000 - $42,000 annualized salary BOE paid bi-weekly (overtime exempt)

Benefits: Northern Stage offers dental and life insurance and covers 100% of these premiums, and offers vision as an optional add-on with an employee contribution of $1/month. Accident insurance is available at an employee cost of $15/month. We offer an employee-funded 403(b) retirement account, an FSA, and pet insurance. There is a 60-day waiting period following your hiring date before Northern Stage benefits become active, with the exception of the 403(b) program, which is active on the first day of employment.

PTO: All full time Northern Stage staff members are eligible for Paid Time Off, according to our PTO policy. Our parental leave policy is that employees receive 6 weeks of leave for each child, and a birthing parent receives 2 additional weeks, for a total of 8 paid weeks (above and beyond any PTO days you choose to use).
