OUT/PLAY MISSION STATEMENT: Empower Queer Actors and Directors; bring new life to Queer plays for contemporary audiences.
"OUT/PLAY: Summer Shorts" is the inaugural new play festival of OUT/PLAY to celebrate local artists, new work, and themed in recognition of “Our Queer Inheritance.” The festival will run June 5 - 8, 2025 at a reputable theater space in Midtown Manhattan (TBA along with final selections!)
THEME
OUR QUEER INHERITANCE: OUT/PLAY spanned almost 100 years of theatre in this past season. How does our queer community look to our past to inform our future? Submissions will be considered based on creative interpretations of this idea. While we appreciate interpretations of classic and pre-existing material, OUT/PLAY will select only new and original playwriting for the Summer Shorts Festival 2025. We are particularly interested in voices from all corners of the LGBTQIA+ community with material to be performed and directed by artists from our community.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Plays should be original, unpublished, and never before produced in New York City. This can be new work specifically for this festival or pulled from your archives.
Scripts should be frozen by its first rehearsal, with minimal changes made during the rehearsal process.
Playwrights must be residents of New York City and available for the duration of the festival.
Playwrights, directors, and actors will be expected to promote the festival via social media and personal networks. Each play will be given a discount code for online ticket purchases.

TIMELINE
Submissions are being accepted on a rolling basis between now until April 10, 2025. Playwrights will be contacted shortly thereafter, with formal selections announced on May 1, 2025. If you have any questions, please email outplaynyc@gmail.com with the subject QUESTIONS: SUMMER SHORTS.

OUT/PLAY is a non-profit queer theater company in our second season, following several successful and sold out runs of The Lisbon Traviata (October 2024), 4 Short Plays by Tennessee Williams (December 2024), Bent (January/February 2025) and the upcoming OUT/PLAY MIXTAPE (March 2025).
