THE JONATHAN LARSON PROJECT

SYNOPSIS: The Jonathan Larson Project is a new musical featuring undiscovered songs by the
Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning writer who died suddenly at the age of 35 in 1996. The score
includes work from unproduced musicals including 1984 and Superbia, songs that were cut from
RENT and tick, tick… BOOM!, songs written for theatrical revues and for the radio, and most
importantly, songs never publicly performed or recorded before The Jonathan Larson Project. From
presidential elections to environmental activism to creating and connecting despite every obstacle,
Jonathan’s voice reaches through time with stunning resonance. At the same time, the show reflects
the journey of an unknown young artist, struggling against rejection, making ends meet as a waiter in a diner, and finding his voice... which he has no idea will someday lead to triumph and enduring fame, tragically after he's gone.

NOTE: The characters in The Jonathan Larson Project are intended to be reflective of the actors who play them. They are artists and friends in various stages of their journey through life, work, and art. They know each other and share similar struggles, ambitions, and passions to the ones Jonathan articulates in his songs. These themes include the pursuit of connection with other people, the hustle to have their work seen and heard, their quest to save the environment and the world, the defense of human rights for marginalized communities, and the abuse of power in our country.

The performers in the show do not have specific character names. It is an ensemble driven show and everyone is onstage for most of the piece. They are referred to below with numbers simply foridentification purposes and are not listed in any particular order, rather in the way they are introduced in the opening number. Character and personality traits are listed below, but may vary based on the audition, casting, and rehearsal process.

The characters are versatile, dynamic performers from diverse backgrounds - including all races,
ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, body types, and artists with disabilities.

SEEKING:

UNDERSTUDY 1 – covers Artists, 1, 3, 4 (lower vocal parts)

UNDERSTUDY 2 – covers Artists 2, 5 (higher vocal parts)

ARTIST 1: THIS ROLE IS CAST (OFFERED & ACCEPTED). tenor, 30s-early 40s. Has a particular
interest in the struggles of creative people to have their work seen and heard and the people who
prevent that possibility. Songs include “Falling Apart” and “Rhapsody.”


ARTIST 2: THERE IS AN OFFER OUT FOR THIS ROLE. alto/mezzo with a strong pop/rock voice,
30s-early 40s. Has a particular interest in relationships, connections, and the power of love. Songs
include “Out of My Dreams” and “Love Heals.”

ARTIST 3: THIS ROLE IS CAST (OFFERED & ACCEPTED). tenor, 30s-early 40s. Has a particular
interest in the environment and saving the Earth. Also has a playful, mischievous side. Songs include
“Iron Mike” and “Pura Vida.”


ARTIST 4: THIS ROLE IS CAST (OFFERED & ACCEPTED). bari-tenor, 30s-early 40s. Has a
particular interest in connecting with others/ understanding humans at both surface and spiritual
levels. Songs include “Valentine’s Day” and “SOS.”


ARTIST 5: THIS ROLE IS CAST (OFFERED & ACCEPTED). soprano with strong belt, 30s-early 40s.
Has a particular interest in fighting for human rights, especially equality for women. Humor shines
through for this artist, especially when circumstances are at their worst. Songs include “Break Out The Booze” and “Hosing the Furniture.”
