The world premiere of Billy Strayhorn: Something to Live For, based on the life and music of the legendary jazz songwriter, will open the 2023-2024 season at the Pittsburgh Public Theater.
Running September 19-October 8, the production will be directed by Kent Gash, with music direction by acclaimed jazz pianist Matthew Whitaker. A passion project of Rob Zellers, written with Gash¸ the musical explores Strayhorn's struggles as a Black, queer man in middle America, as well as his artistic triumphs with Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday. The musical will feature a live jazz band, and will be presented at the O'Reilly Theater.
Following Something To Live For, the Pennsylvania company will present Tiny Beautiful Things, based on the acclaimed book by Cheryl Strayed, and adapted for the stage by Nia Vardalos. The play will be presented November 1—19. Additionally, A Christmas Story: The Play will return for the holiday season December 9—23.
