Off-Broadway News William Jackson Harper and April Matthis Will Lead World Premiere of Primary Trust Off-Broadway

Roundabout Theatre Company will produce the new play from Eboni Booth, with Knud Adams set to direct.

The new play Primary Trust by Eboni Booth will make its world premiere Off-Broadway next spring with Roundabout Theatre Company, led by stars William Jackson Harper and April Matthis. The play will begin previews at the Laura Pels Theater in the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre May 4, 2023, with an opening set for May 25. The limited engagement will run through July 10.

Knud Adams, currently represented Off-Broadway with I'm Revolting at Atlantic Theater Company, will direct the new work. Primary Trust centers on a recently laid-off bookstore employee (Harper) who is encouraged by a tiki bar waiter (Matthis) to try something new.

Harper has previously appeared Off-Broadway in plays at Playwrights Horizons, Signature, Second Stage, and Lincoln Center, among others, and made his Broadway debut in All the Way. He is Emmy-nominated for his role as Chidi in the NBC comedy series The Good Place. Harper can currently be seen in Peacock’s comedic thriller series The Resort.

Matthis is currently making her Broadway debut in The Piano Lesson and has previously been seen on a Roundabout stage as the title character in Toni Stone, for which she won an Obie Award. She is a member of the experimental theatre collective Elevator Repair Service and a co-writer on the epilogue of their production of Baldwin & Buckley at Cambridge, currently playing Off-Broadway at The Public Theater.

Additional casting and the creative team will be announced in the coming weeks.
