The new Scottish musical is written by and stars Islander's Bethany Tennick, fresh from her Off-Broadway debut.

While attending Edinburgh Fringe for Playbill Goes Fringe, Playbill correspondents Leah Putnam and Margaret Hall saw LAND: A Scottish Musical, which is making its debut at the festival this year. Blending traditional Scottish folk and modern electronic music, it asks audiences to question and reconsider how we relate to the earth and each other through two parallel stories.

In the contemporary tale, a young man cares for his elderly neighbor in a tenement flat. Initially suspicious of each other, their relationship thaws as they form a bond in spite of their generational differences. This is mirrored by the historical story, taking place in the Scottish Highlands during the 18th century. A young soldier, far from home and his sense of purpose, comes across a crofter (a tenant farmer) with a gift for poetry. As he is illiterate, the young soldier writes down as many of the crofter's sayings as he can in an attempt to save his wisdom for the next generation.

Featuring Islander's Bethany Tennick, the show also stars Christopher Alexander and Robin Campbell. LAND features concept and direction by Fraser Scott, a book by Iona Ramsay, and music and lyrics by Tennick.

Playbill met up with the company to film two exclusive clips: "Soldier's Song, which takes place in the 18th century as the soldier struggles to make peace with where life has taken him, and "Miss The Snow," the finale where the contemporary characters reflect after spending Christmas together one last time.
