The Trevor Project, the organization focused on ending suicide among LGBTQ Youth, honored Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth and filmmaker-designer Tom Ford at its December 3 gala, TrevorLIVE at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, California.

Chenoweth accepted the organization’s Icon Award; Ford got the Hero Award. Guest performers included Shoshana Bean, Carol Burnett, and the band Garbage.

One of the high points of the gala came when 11-year-old Joshua Turchin sang “Stranger,” a heartfelt song from Trevor the Musical, which recently completed an extended run at the Alexandra C. and John D. Nichols Theatre in Glencoe, Illinois.

The song has lyrics by Dan Collins and music by Julianne Wick Davis. Based on an Oscar-winning short film, Trevor: The Musical tells the story of a 13-year-old boy who realizes he is homosexual and faces prejudice from his parents and friends. Turchin has been featured in two national tours of A Christmas Story the Musical, and appeared in the YouTube video “What’s a Jew to Do on Christmas?” singing the number, which he composed himself.

The musical has been mentioned for a Broadway run.

We both have similar beliefs and come from a place that loves everybody. I’ve tried to show it to the world through my music, and Mr. Ford certainly does it through his designs and filmmaking.”
