Ahead of the upcoming July 13 one-night-only concert performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel at London's Royal Festival Hall, Jamie Muscato has released a sneak peek at his "Soliloquy." Listen above.
Muscato (Heathers, Moulin Rouge! The Musical) will lead the cast as Billy Bigelow, opposite Christine Allado (Prince of Egypt) as Julie Jordan and Rebecca Caine (Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera) as Nettie Fowler.
News of the concert follows 2023's 80th Anniversary Rodgers and Hammerstein concert, which was filmed and later broadcast in U.K. movie theatres and streamed in the U.S.; and the announcement of a two-night concert production of Oklahoma! set for Theatre Royal Drury Lane in August.
Emma Butler (Never Have I Ever) is directing, with music direction by Adam Hoskins. Further casting is to be announced.
Based on Ferenc Molnár's Liliom, the 1945 musical tells the troubled love story of carousel barker Billy Bigelow and millworker Julie Jordan. After Bigelow is killed trying to rob a man, leaving behind a pregnant wife, he's granted one more chance to return to earth and do right by his widow and now-teenage daughter. The classic score introduced such favorites as "(When I Marry) Mr. Snow," "If I Loved You," "June Is Bustin' Out All Over," "Soliloquy," "What's the Use of Wond'rin'," "and "You'll Never Walk Alone."
