Sleep all day. Party all night. It's fun to be a vampire in The Lost Boys, and the undead are being kind enough to share their mixtape.
Joel Schumacher's 1987 cult classic The Lost Boys is being developed into a musical for the stage, with a book by David Hornsby and Chris Hoch and music by the band The Rescues. As the production builds up to a big announcement, they have been teasing tiny snippets of music from two interpolated songs from The Rescue's catalog: "Secret Comes Out" and "My Heart With You." Now, for the first time, fans are able to hear a significant portion of a new song, thanks to The Rescues' surprise performance of "Belong to Someone." Check out a snippet of the performance in the video above.
Tony winner Michael Arden (Parade) is attached to direct the project, which centers on the brotherly duo of Michael and Sam after they move to the fictional town of Santa Carla, California, only to fall into a gang of teenage rebel vampires and adolescent vampire hunters.
In a previous, invitation-only industry presentation, The Lost Boys starred Caissie Levy (Frozen) as Lucy Emerson, Casey Likes (Back to the Future) as Michael Emerson, Nathan Levy (Dear Evan Hansen) as Sam Emerson, and Lorna Courtney (& Juliet) as Star. Information on continued casting through the development process has not been announced.
Tony nominee Ethan Popp serves as music supervisor, with general management by Bespoke Theatricals for the development process. Produced by James Carpinello, Marcus Chait, and Patrick Wilson—marking the first joint producing collaboration for the three actors—the musical is being developed by special arrangement with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures.
Using vampirism to explore the physical transformation, sexual awakening, and identity experimentation inherent to a teenager's coming-of-age, The Lost Boys inspired a number of subsequent youth culture vampire projects, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Vampire Diaries, and Twilight.
The supernatural horror-comedy film has developed a dedicated fan base in the years since its release, which helped to launch the careers of Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Corey Feldman, Corey Haim, and more. The original film won the award for Best Horror Film by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, and spawned a franchise that included two sequels and two comic book series.
