Cabaret & Concert News University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music to Honor Stephen Flaherty at Carnegie Hall

The Tony winning composer, known for Ragtime, Once On This Island, and more, graduated from the Cincinnati institution.

The University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music will honor Tony winning composer and alumnus Stephen Flaherty January 14, 2024 at 7 PM at Carnegie Hall. 

Flaherty is known for his collaborations with lyricist and book writer Lynn Ahrens, including RagtimeOnce On This IslandAnastasia, and more. Proceeds from the tribute event will support new and ongoing educational programming at CCM, as well as student scholarship opportunities. 

The evening will feature CCM alums Christy Altomare, Ashley Brown, Liz Callaway, Jason Graae, Aaron Lazar, Stephanie Jae Park, Geoff PackardAlton Fitzgerald White, and more, along with guest artist Bryonha Marie. They will be joined by a 50-piece orchestra comprising CCM musicians, more than 40 students from the musical theatre department, and a prima ballerina from the dance department.

Musical selections will include never-before-performed pieces from Flaherty's childhood, the first Ahrens and Flaherty song, and more new selections, along with well known favorites from Flaherty's catalogue. The evening will also feature a series of filmed interviews with Flaherty and friends.

The show is directed and choreographed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge. The event was created by Jim Semmelman, Kevin McCollum, Jeffrey Saver, David Goldsmith, and Elaine M. Cox. Saver serves as music supervisor, arranger, director, and conductor, with Goldsmith as writer, curator, and interviewer. Goldsmith also contributed parody lyrics. CCM alums will stage manage.
