Tony Awards Tony Awards Admin Committee Rules on New York, New York Plus Shucked, Camelot, Life of Pi, More

Broadway's biggest honors will be handed out June 11 at the United Palace Theatre in New York City.

The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the third and final time this season April 28, making eligibility decisions for Life of Pi; Shucked; Fat Ham; Lerner & Loewe’s Camelot; Peter Pan Goes Wrong; The Thanksgiving Play; Prima Facie; Good Night, Oscar; Summer, 1976; New York, New York; and The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window.

Eligibility for the various awards categories is usually determined based on opening-night billing as printed in the show's Playbill. The Administration Committee delivers rulings when producers request eligibility that differs from the show's billing or in situations where the billing makes the categorization more difficult, such as when a production's cast is billed completely in alphabetical order rather than having its leading stars at the top.

Playbill has learned that the score for the new musical New York, New York—featuring several John Kander and Fred Ebb tunes from other works as well as new songs penned by Kander and Lin-Manuel Miranda—will not be eligible for Best Score.

The other group of decisions was mostly unsurprising, with Aaron Sorkin deemed eligible in the Best Book of a Musical category for his work rewriting the libretto for the revival of Camelot.

The 2022-2023 Tony Awards Administration Committee comprises Ted Chapin, Michael David, Sue Frost, John Gore, Calandra Hackney, Heather Hitchens, David Henry Hwang, Natasha Katz, Kenny Leon, Paul Libin, Kevin McCollum, Dessie Moynihan, Carl Mulert, James L. Nederlander, Laura Penn, Michael Price, Judith O. Rubin, Charlotte St. Martin, Peter Schneider, Thomas Schumacher, Ralph Sevush, Emilio Sosa, and David Stone.

Funny Girl star Lea Michele and 2022 Tony winner Myles Frost will announce the 76th Annual Tony Award nominations May 2. Hosted by Ariana DeBose, the American Theatre Wing’s 76th Annual Tony Awards, presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, will air live June 11 from the United Palace in Washington Heights from 8-11 PM on CBS, streaming live and on demand on Paramount+. CBS and Pluto TV will present The Tony Awards: Act One, a pre-show of live, exclusive content leading into the 76th Annual Tony Awards. The celebration commences at 6:30 PM ET and continues through 8 PM.

The Tony Awards, founded by the American Theatre Wing in 1947, are co-presented by the Wing and The Broadway League, along with White Cherry Entertainment. Carnegie Mellon University, City National Bank, Playbill, Sofitel New York, and United Airlines are sponsors.
