Tom Stoppard, the four-time Tony Award-winning author of Travesties, The Real Thing, The Coast of Utopia and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, is putting his personal spin on one of the most-adapted stories of all time, Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, according to Deadline.com.

The story of Ebenezer Scrooge and the three ghosts who visit him on Christmas Eve will be directed by Bennett Miller and kept in its original 19th century setting. No premiere date or cast was announced.

Broadway and film producer Scott Rudin (King Charles III, Shuffle Along, Fish in the Dark) will produce the film with Miller, Megan Ellison and Jennifer Fox for Annapurna.

Aside from popular film versions of the story, including the 1951 version with Alistair Sim, the 1970 musical version (Scrooge) with Albert Finney and the modern-dress adaptation Scrooged with Bill Murray, there have been dozens of stage versions that have become staples of resident theatres around the country. Patrick Stewart offered a solo version of the entire original story in 1991, 1992, 1994 and 2001 on Broadway. Gregory Hines starred in a 1979 Broadway musical adaptation titled Comin' Uptown.

Stoppard is not afraid to tackle the classics. He won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for 1998’s Shakespeare in Love, which purported to show how the Bard's romantic life influenced the writing of Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare in Love is being adapted as a stage musical.
