News "The Waltons" Star Set for Mothers and Sons at PTC Michael Learned, who won three Emmy Awards for playing the soft-spoken wife Olivia Walton on the hit TV show "The Waltons," will assume the role of a more outspoken woman when she stars as Katharine Gerard in Mothers and Sons at the Philadelphia Theatre Company.

Directed by Wendy C. Goldberg, performances of Terrence McNally's play will begin Feb. 6, 2015, and continue through March 8.

"In Mothers and Sons, a woman pays an unexpected visit to the apartment of her late son’s partner, who is now married to another man and has a young son," press notes state. "This eloquent, timely, and intensely resonant play is a moving reflection on a changed America and the ever-evolving understanding of family."

Learned is an Emmy Award winner for her role in the TV series "The Waltons." Her TV work also includes "Nurse," "Hothouse," "Scrubs," "General Hospital" and "The Young and the Restless." Her Broadway credits include The Best Man and The Sisters Rosensweig; other stage work includes Driving Miss Daisy, Elizabeth the Queen, Woman in Mind, Hapgood and Mary Stuart.

Mothers and Sons, which marked McNally's 20th Broadway show and 50th year on Broadway, played its final Broadway performance June 22 at the John Golden Theatre. The work received 2014 Tony Award nominations for Best Play and Leading Actress in a Play (Tyne Daly).
