Continuing with its mission to achieve gender parity in theatre, LA-based collective The Kilroys has released its third annual list of industry-recommended new plays. Dubbed “The List,” it is made up of 32 production-ready works by female or trans playwrights.
The List is based on a survey of 230 artistic directors, literary managers, professors, producers, directors and dramaturgs. Industry participants were given the opportunity to recommend three to five unproduced plays representing the best work they have encountered in the past 12 months.
The collection features new works by Dry Powder playwright Sarah Burgess; Ironbound playwright Martyna Majok; The Insurgents playwright Lucy Thurber; and MJ Kaufman, featured as part of Playbill Pride’s Who’s Next. Jen Silverman is featured on the list twice; her play The Moors will play Off-Broadway next spring.
The List serves as a resource for American theatre makers. In a survey of previous List playwrights, 95% of respondents reported an increase of requests for their plays, and 80% reported subsequent productions at notable theatres across the country.
