HIV and AIDS service organization GMHC will honor the Tony-winning duo at a February event at Joe's Pub in NYC.

Tony-winning Smash and Hairspray songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will be honored with the 2025 Howard Ashman Award at AIDS and HIV service organization GMHC's annual fundraiser concert, set for February 10 at Joe's Pub in NYC.

A host of Broadway, TV, and film favorites will be on hand to salute the duo, with Cacophony Daniels (aka Courter Simmons) hosting.

The award honors Shaiman and Wittman's long history of HIV and AIDS advocacy and fundraising, including a number of Wittman-directed GMHC fundraiser events in the '90s. Proceeds from the event, which will be music directed by Kyle Branzel, will go towards GMHC's programs that support people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS, which include HIV/STI testing, prevention, mental health and substance abuse treatment, legal and immigration support, housing, workforce development, policy advocacy, and meals and nutrition.

The honor is named for the late Oscar, Golden Globe, and Grammy-winning book writer, director, and lyricist Howard Ashman, whose body of work includes such titles as Beauty and the BeastThe Little MermaidLittle Shop of Horrors, and Aladdin. Ashman died of AIDS-related complications in 1991, becoming one of the first major publicly-facing victims of the AIDS epidemic.

Past recipients of the honor include Ashman's longtime writing partner Alan Menken, Terrence McNally, Javier Muñoz, Lea DeLaria, Kathy Najimy, André De Shields, Andrew Rannells, Michael Urie, and Tom Viola.
