Off-Broadway's Fled Collective has announced the lineup for its 2023 season. This marks the second season for the collective at Tribeca’s Flea Theater, serving as the organization’s Key Resident Company, which is a a reparative grant and partnership offered to a company that centers Black, Brown, and Queer artists.
First up is the return of live radio show, Radio Fled. Creators Dolores “D-Lo” Avery Pereira and co-producer Briar "Bri" Robin Pollock will host live community conversations with theatre professionals and listeners who “call in,” discussing various topics around building an equitable theatre industry. Information on upcoming episodes, and a new listening location, is forthcoming.
The season will also see the return of The Fled's Serials, a late-night episodic play competition newly prioritizing BIPOC and Queer voices. Featuring Fled resident actors and early career playwrights and directors, Serials sees team performing short, original episodic plays, while the audience votes for its favorites to return with a new installment. The series was originally created by Dominic Spillane and Stephen Stout and further developed by members of The Flea Theater's former resident artist company, The Bats. The first competition will be presented February 9-11.
A workshop of the new play Sway will be staged May 15-28, as written by SMJ and directed by Daniella Caggiano. Following three social media influencers who agree to go on an exclusive retreat with a mysterious reality star, Sway explores the exploitation of human connection through internet influencing. Sway was recently named a semifinalist for the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's 2022 National Playwrights Conference, and was a semifinalist for the 2022-2023 New Dramatists Princess Grace Award Fellowship.
October 16 through 22 will bring Step Kids, a new one-act, hip-hop musical by Tyrone L. Robinson that centers on a group of teenagers auditioning to join an elite All Star step dance team. The show shares the history of step dancing in the United States, as well as its roots in African dance traditions.
Finally, Jon Jon Johnson's Fled (Re)Acts, inspired by DMV's Forum ReActs, will be staged as a series of response generator variety nights, where artists will collaborate to generate art in response to current events. Dates and locations for the various (Re)Acts will be announced at a later date.
